I Live For Art

Cat and fish tank

2020_06_02 20_49 Office Lens.jpg

This piece serves as an introduction to the portfolio with a set-up of tone by reflecting the viewer's experience in a quirky manner; a cat viewing fish in a fish tank. The style of linework was inspired by Artist David Shrigley whose crude, simple style is quite charming when contextualised against certain backgrounds.

Laika comic cover

The second piece is the refined cover of a comic I made based on the story of Laika. I’m very proud of this piece. I looked at the panel work and art for the comic within(this is also the 3rd piece in the portfolio) I looked at the likes of Sci-fi comic art from the ’50s for inspiration, I replicated the look by mixing Indian-ink and pen drawing and mono-printing the night sky and spacescapes. For the typography, I searched for a ’50s, space-themed font for the type and laid it out in adobe illustrator before importing it all in adobe Inndesign.

Laika Comic Panels

I was commissioned to work on this unique illustration, project and couldn’t have been happier to do so. Working on it enabled me to use my knowledge and skills in different illustration techniques to bring a piece to life which I’m extremely proud of. Sci-fi comic art from the ’50s was the inspiration, I replicated the look by mixing Indian-ink and pen drawing and mono-printing the rainy, night sky.

The fourth and fifth pieces are concept pieces for the Laika project. They’re drawings that I made when working out I was going to draw the main character and an interactive object that would be in the story. These are close (almost identical) to what is shown in the previous two pieces. They were made with pencils for sketching the design and fine-liner pen for inking the lines.

Ed ShEEEE-ran

The sixth and seventh pieces are from a different project. For the brief I was asked to create a work that spoke out about something you hate. I myself personally hate the music of Ed Sheeran, with myself looking to be an illustrator I decided to go with something more akin with what I did on the Laika project. I produced an illustrative piece that you would see on the cover of the New Yorker or as a satirical cartoon in a newspaper. I left out the typography I originally had as there was some devision on its inclusion and the piece on its own without it communicates its use just fine.

Ginger bum fluff

The other piece is what I made when sketching to ascertain ideas on paper. I feel this piece was included as it creates a surprise for the viewer that either make them laugh or shock them; either reaction gives a certain attitude or humour of the artist (myself) in question were he wouldn’t just be a ‘yes-man’  and can endear them to the interviewee.

'shape of you'

The next piece along is a graphical response I made in the early phases of my Ed Sheeran Project. I looked at Artist – Graphic Designer Barbara Kruger who made these pieces that call into question the subject of the image with the accompanying typography. I used an image of Ed Sheeran to direct the message at the work of the musician with a lyric from one of his songs. I also played around with the positioning and colour of some typographical elements to highlight and accentuate key elements as well as pay homage to the style of Barbara Krueger. I added a one star at the bottom left corner to run home the point that this is work that criticizes the subject of the image. This piece was included in the portfolio as an expansion of the Anti – Ed Sheeran pieces that came before this and to demonstrate some graphical flexibility and experimentation on my part (I.E I have experience with professional level editing software and have some traditional graphic work under my belt)

Red Monoprint

The ninth piece in the portfolio is a mono-print I created as an experiment from the same project as the previous three. I find this piece myself quite different from the others because of a pop-art vibe from bold simple colour and This piece is all red which the previous few pieces had splashes of it; I thought for the purposes of the portfolio this would be an interesting approach to have the introduction pieces be monochrome and towards the middle have some colour to show off some contemporary pieces by the artist.

yellow wire print

The tenth piece was another experiment from the first project from the first year. The brief called for us to create a visual communication a message or tone and this was one of many pieces I created along the way. This was made using wire which were tied and manipulated to the form of a face-profile.

Dog

The second-to-last piece is a print I made for the Laika-illustration project. This was an attempt by me to create a Russian inspired propaganda poster which in terms of context would gel with the story of Laika. This piece was made using the same mono-printing technique with the other monoprints used here with the addition of some swiping back the ink to create some variation in tone and subtle blemishes of grey around the inked-up blacks.

cat-gram selfie

The final piece is an illustration created in the same vein as the first piece to mimic the first piece and serve as an outro to the Portfolio. Like how the first piece was a cat looking into a fish tank this piece opts for a cat taking a selfie which is also framed within an Instagram feed, this strikes the viewer as playful and charming which can be lacking in a lot of other Portfolios of work.
